The International Finance Corporation has announced its support for #EndRacism, hanging a huge banner from its headquarters.

But people in Guatemala and around the world are outraged by the Bank’s hypocrisy, after the IFC refused to accept responsibility for harms it helped cause to indigenous communities, or offer any remedy, despite an independent investigation finding it had breached its own rules. On Weds 1st July please send the following tweets:

.@IFC_org Are you going to own up to your ‘racist response’ to the investigation into the Canbalam 1 dam in Santa Cruz Barillas #Guatemala and end your impunity for the harms caused to #indigenous people?

The People’s Assembly of Huehuetenango (ADH) is calling for solidarity actions from the international community after the IFC rejected responsibility for the problems caused by its investment in a dam project. ADH condemns the IFC’s response to an independent investigation by the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, which found the IFC broke its own standards, calling it ‘racist’ and ‘riddled with impunity’.
While the IFC is trumpeting its support for anti-racism, with its CEO tweeting “I’m proud to see these #EndRacism banners go up on the @IFC_org building”, the mainly indigenous communities of Santa Cruz Barillas are still suffering to this day after the project “sowed terror” according to ADH, including “the unjust imprisonment of more than twenty community leaders, the murder of Andrés Francisco Miguel, and years of suffering. This hydroelectric project profoundly and painfully transformed the life of an entire region.”
